The breeding timing guide
More breedings are lost to bad timing than to bad dogs. Here's how to get it right.
Timing
- Knowing she's in heat isn't knowing she's ready. Guessing by day count wastes a season and a stud fee.
- Progesterone testing tells you when she's ovulating and when to inseminate. Start testing early.
- Book a month or more ahead. Last minute costs the most.
The stud
- Be honest about her weak points: head, back, rear, front, thickness, temperament, breathing.
- Pick the stud that fixes them, not the prettiest one.
- Ask what his earlier litters grew into.
Whelping
- Most bulldog litters come by C-section. Progesterone dropping to around four or below is the usual signal.
- Keep puppies clean from the first hour, and fingertip-feed any that won't latch.
- Know which problems need a vet at two in the morning.
