Color and merle, explained simply
Color is the thing buyers ask about first and understand least.
Merle
- There's no such thing as carrying merle. One copy and the dog is merle. No copy and he isn't.
- Merle shows on black, blue, chocolate and lilac.
- It hides on fawn and platinum. The dog can be merle without looking merle, and still pass it on.
- Double merle, one copy from each parent, is the real risk. Never breed two merles and hope.
My opinion
- Pick for health, temperament, structure and function. Color comes along for the ride.
- A rare color on a badly built dog is still a badly built dog.
