How Do I Pick a Good Bulldog Puppy?

The short answer

Don't get mesmerized by the puppy. Every bulldog puppy looks cute, and a cute puppy doesn't always grow up to be a good-looking, healthy adult.

Follow my 3P rule: the program, the pedigree (the parents and grandparents), then the puppy, in that order. The biggest sign of what your puppy will turn out to be is the dogs it comes from, and how consistent that program is.

Two things about picking a puppy that most people don't know. Part 2 plays right after.

Two things that surprise people

One: a cute puppy doesn't always grow up to be a cute adult dog. A lot of times it won't. Two, even crazier: a puppy that comes from one cute, good-looking adult isn't guaranteed to grow up good-looking either, or to have the health, the structure, the temperament and the functionality.

When I say cute, I mean everything: the rolls, the thickness, the structure, the ratios, the head size, the back length, and also everything that makes the dog healthy, functional and good-tempered. It takes years of experience to look at a puppy and know it's going to grow up right, because honestly, every puppy looks super cute.

The biggest indicator is the parents, the grandparents and the overall program. If the program has good parents, good grandparents and quality, consistent dogs, your puppy will most likely grow up to look like the other adults in that program.

That's why one good-looking parent isn't enough. Maybe that one dog is the abnormality, a lucky example, and the grandparents and the brothers and sisters weren't good at all. Consistency is what gets you consistency: a puppy that keeps its looks, its health, its structure and its temperament all the way to adulthood, for the next 12-plus years of your life together.

My 3P rule: program, pedigree, puppy

When you're picking a puppy, don't get mesmerized by it. They all look cute. We all get emotionally attached and buy into the illusion.

Number one is the program: who you're getting from. Their trustworthiness, their referrals, all of that. Number two is the parents: that's what the puppy is most likely going to resemble, in attitude, in structure, in everything. And number three is the puppy.

What I mean by pedigree and program

Pedigree means their lines: the parents and the grandparents. That's what decides, more than anything, how they're going to look. Do the parents look good? Do the grandparents look good? Are the parents healthy? Are they good-tempered?

The program means: does the person you're getting from have a good reputation for the dogs you like? Are their dogs well-kept? Are they going to be able to help you out after? Are they producing dogs consistently, with the look you want?

If you buy from some random person, you don't know what they've done or what they've produced. You could be getting a dog that isn't what you think it is. They could be lying about papers. It's the same reason people buy a car from a dealer with a reputation and not from a guy who built it in his backyard.

The puppy test that never lies: the parents

The bulldog puppy test that never lies is the parents. This is DaChamp, one of our top mini bulldog studs. He has the structure, so there's no surprise when his puppies have the structure.

Look at his eyes: no cherry eye, no surgeries, no inside-out eye, no tears. People don't focus on that enough. No surprise his puppies come out with good eyes, good temperament, a great muzzle, a good head and no underbite.

It sounds like common sense, but it's the real test. Get your puppy from healthy parents with good structure, good temperament and good functionality, because the direct parents are the closest thing to what your puppy is going to turn out to be. And look at the full package, not just one thing.

Why the puppy isn't the most important part

How do you choose a healthy bulldog puppy? The puppy actually isn't the most important thing. It's the parents and the program. That's one of our stud dogs: the dad.
