This Common Feeding Mistake Can KILL Your Dog (Bloat Warning)

>> so dog bloat is when a dog is just what it it is what it sounds like is it's a dog bloating. It's a stomach bloating filling with gases, fluids, food [music] and then twisting which is extremely serious and it cuts off the blood flow to the from where the twist is down and it's potentially life-threatening and normally life-threatening if if not fixed. Normally you have to get to the vet really quick and you're talking about [music].

It can be it can be dog can die you know within minutes, 30 minutes to a couple hours. So it's it's extremely dangerous. >> it's very easy to to defend protect against defend against account for and let's get into that. And the reason I'm I'm I'm going over this is one it's it's really dangerous.

It happened to me when I was younger not like you know when I was one of our family dogs. And it just happened to someone and honestly like shame on me I should have this should have been one of my first and I always account for it too. It's funny like but I never really say it but this is why I do a certain feeding process, why I do a certain watering process and why [music] I am with with my dogs but someone just had a a king Escobar son and he died out of nowhere. Obviously they went they went to the vet after he died and checked him [music] and the the vet said that he had bloat and it's so stupid slash.

Um like easy to defend against but if you don't know and you're ignorant about it, you know, I'm I'm not trying to like belittle the people but it sucks but it sucks I should have you know informed them or tried to inform them or or whatever. But anyway, so dog bloat is a dog and normally what the way it happens it can happen through different gases and stuff but the most typical way is a dog that has a [music] stomach that is full and usually gets and then gets active and the stomach it [music] twists. That's normally it and to be even more specific the way that the the most common way >> is giving your dog a bunch of food, dry food. And dry food's.

Fine, but when they eat dry food, and then they drink a lot of water because they're really thirsty, and [music] or they just did did a lot of work or or whatever running stuff like that, the dry food what's dry food do when it gets water? It swells. So, you have a stomach that's full of dry food, and then you fill it with water, [music] and then it swells double because dry food swells, and it causes gases to release, and it causes the stomach to twist, especially if the dog is active. And it can be not even an active dog. It can be a dog with a with a just the stomach gets too full. And when the stomach twists, um no normally you have.

To get the vet very very very quickly because this is a this is a life-threatening thing, and it will kill a dog fast. So, a couple things that will that that will that will show that a dog is that has bloat, um and there's nothing really like 100% consistent [music] with with with like like you know, it's 100% bloat, but one, dog throwing up, and almost nothing's coming out. Why can nothing come out? Because the stomach's [music] twisted. Um two, uh drooling, um restlessness, and three, that the stomach diaphragm is very hard and bloated. So, those are signs, but the best thing to do is just to to to to completely avoid this. Um and it's especially common with the >> with the bigger deeper chested.

Dogs. And normally the bigger dogs, English bulldogs are common. Uh one [music] because they do overeat. Um great danes, um the bigger bigger chested dogs, american bulldogs, >> um things like that are going to be more common more common to bloat. So, I had this happen to us, all right, when I was very young, I was 5 years old, we had one of our one of our um it was a great dane that had bloat and died. Um [music] it can happen very quick, but the most important thing is just to avoid this. So, to avoid bloating, >> um when you feed your dog, just like, you know, with a with a child or human or yourself, [music] normally you're not going to the dog's not going.

To play right after. You're going to give them like, you know, 30 minutes [music] at least. With my dogs, I do 30 minutes to an hour. Uh especially especially on on hotter days. >> um also, when when when you feed your dog, they shouldn't be >> crazy thirsty. Um but they shouldn't have just drank a ton of water, either. But so they you're going to [music] feed them the dry food, wet food mix. And honestly, that's why I actually mix wet wet food and water and liquid into [music] my dry food because it causes it to swell beforehand, so there's no surprise when the dog eats it that gets in their stomach and it's and it doesn't get a chance to really fill up because it's already.

Filling up. The the dry food is already absorbing stuff. >> so, that's one little trick. Second second second trick is feed your dog [music] I already said it and don't let the dog go out for 30 minutes to an hour. Third trick is you you I mean, don't let them out. Don't let them do exercise. Um third trick is don't ever feed your dog when they're like I said are are super thirsty and or um just got done excessively playing. Let them calm let them calm down for first. And four, don't feed your dog and then immediately give them water. Um [music] and most of the time, this is not going to happen because most of the time, if you don't overfeed your dog,.

If you don't add all these things together, normally it takes like sort of kind of perfect storm for this to happen. But I don't allow the perfect storm. I I I account for every single one of these little things in the worst-case >> so, not only like I'll feed my dog and then I don't give them water or I don't allow them water for a good 30 minutes after so the food start to digest and they don't get bloat. But normally on a bloat on a bloat thing, like when a dog bloats, it's like you fed your dog, then they drank a bunch of water, then you took them out for a long walk or running out and play [music] in playing, then they drank more.

Water, and then their stomach twisted, you know, some something like that. It's like all the things I'm telling you not to do [music] at once. But that being said, it could in a in a crazy >> um low percentage unfortunate scenario, maybe just feed your dog and then he drinks a bunch of water and then he just gets bloat. [music] it's rare and this is a rare thing and that's why you probably don't don't haven't heard about this, but I'm talking about it because we just had [music] someone that had a king charles first on that died because of this and it's horrible and it's so easily preventable. And at the same time, [music] it's also semi easy to do if you just.

Unluckily get all those perfect things like with the with activity with food with water with dry food with overeating all that stuff. Normally with dogs that don't overeat, you're never going to have this problem. But [music] with especially with a with a big a really um like overeating style dog, which is very common in the bulldogs. That's why I'm talking about this because they I have 70% of bulldogs are dogs that will eat non-stop and those are dogs that can is very dangerous. [music] imagine a dog eating like crazy, super full, then drinking a bunch of water, then going out and playing. Perfect recipe for bloat. [music] and like I said, with bloat, there's not like symptoms that 100% >> you have the stuff I mentioned,.

You know, the throwing up without much coming out, the strong the big abdomen, drooling, restlessness. [music] um but you don't really have much time. Depending on the dog, you have 30 minutes to you know, a couple of hours and your dog just drops dead and then it's it's a horrible thing. So, this is that's extremely important that we should always account for and honestly just for everything like even for your bulldog like I make sure my dog doesn't go out and play after cuz I just don't want him throwing up. Because again [music] like throwing up is dangerous, too. If a dog throws up, they have a chance to aspirate. If they have a chance to aspirate, they get pneumonia. If they get pneumonia, they.

Get very sick. You know, and it's more common with bulldogs for them that to aspirate because they have the narrow air the narrow their the narrow airways um trachea esophagus, so it's easier. So, these are all things that you can go down a rabbit hole, but [music] it's very easy also to to prevent, too. And if you have a big dog, you have german shepherds, you have you have um a great dane, you have those you know, american bulldogs, this is something you should account for, [music] too. Something I always account for, and that's why I always like to control my dogs eating and drinking. It's a lot safer safer for them. If you don't have it [music] don't do everything I'm doing, I'm not.
