How Much Exercise Does an English Bulldog Need?

The short answer

Not a lot. Bulldogs aren't working dogs like German Shepherds. They need sun, fresh air, some play and short walks, and a lot of love. Use common sense: let them play as long as they're comfortable, and stop when you see them laboring.

Be careful in heat and humidity: limit play, give them shade, AC and water, and play in the evening in summer. And yes, they're great apartment dogs. You don't need a big yard.

They need fun, not a workout

In my opinion bulldogs are the best dogs, because all they want is love. They need to be outside, get some sun and fresh air and move around, but you don't have to put them through an exercise regimen. They don't need a big yard either. They want to hang out, be petted and be funny. That's why they're good for apartments and for houses.

Activity level depends on the bulldog. A well-built dog like DaChamp, with a strong back and strong hips, will be more active than a bulldog that isn't as structurally sound. Ours are agile and active, but still have that chill, funny bulldog attitude.

Warning: be careful when it's hot and humid. Don't overwork your bulldog. Let them rest, put them in the AC, and always give them water.

Puppies: as much as they're comfortable doing

How much exercise does a bulldog puppy need? Common sense: as much as they're comfortably doing. If they're happily running around and playing, let them play. If you see them laboring or uncomfortable, err on the side of caution: that's enough.

They don't need to be run a mile like a German Shepherd. They need fun, love, sun, fresh air and a little activity, in moderation, especially in summer in places like Florida and Texas. And the standard rules: no hard play right after eating.

Five bulldog myths

One: they can't be exercised. They 100% can, and they need play, exercise and activity. It makes them healthier and happier. Two: they're unhealthy. That depends on the line you get from: it can be true or false.

Three: they're lazy. True, but they're also very playful and active, the best kind of lazy. Four: they're dumb. Totally false. They can be stubborn, some more than others, but they're very smart.

Five: they can't handle hot weather. We're in central Florida, at 90-plus degrees with crazy humidity, and our bulldogs are fine. When it's hot, limit playtime and make sure they have a cool place and water. How well they handle it depends on the line. Most important of all: get from a good breeder and do your research.

Are bulldogs good apartment dogs?

Yes. They're chill companion dogs that don't need much exercise, especially a properly bred one. A little more work as puppies, but as adults they're easy dogs. Micros are even easier in apartments.

Summer: watch them, and play at night

Especially in summer, keep an eye on your dogs outside, because they can overheat easily. In the hot months we take ours out to play mostly at night: it gets way too hot for bulldogs, and they can overheat extremely quickly.

"Is she walking right?"

Someone asked if this puppy can't walk right. She's a thick, short-legged puppy running through thick zoysia grass. As soon as she's on clear ground: a perfect little gait.
