How Do I Bathe and Clean a Bulldog Puppy?

The short answer

Keep your hand in the water the whole time so it stays warm, never too hot. Clean the paws and nails so there's no poop in them. Dry gently with paper towels first, then a blow dryer, moving it constantly and checking the heat with your fingers.

Then put the puppy somewhere warm until it's fully dry. Young puppies can't be rubbed dry hard enough, and you don't want them cold and shaking. Bathing your own dog is also the best time to check them over.

A puppy's first bath at two and a half weeks. Parts 2, 3 and 4 play right after.

The first bath, step by step (Parts 1 to 4)

This is a Fury daughter's first bath, at two and a half weeks. I usually give the first bath between two and three weeks, depending on how dirty they get and how well the mom is keeping up with them. You can even start telling temperament at this age: she's very calm, just like her dad.

Keep the puppies clean, especially the nails: make sure there's no poop in them, because they poke each other and can infect each other's eyes. This mom has eight puppies, so she's getting a little behind and I'm helping.

Keep your hand in the water the whole time so it's warm, but not too warm. Dry them first with paper towels, which actually wick up the water better than a towel. Puppies this young can't be rubbed hard enough to dry, and I don't want them cold and shaking for long.

Then a blow dryer. I switch between settings depending on the part of the body, keep my fingers there to feel the heat, and keep it moving so the heat never sits in one spot. After, she goes on a towel with a heating pad underneath until she's warm.

Why bathe your own dog

Bathing your dog keeps them healthy, safe and free of infections. On top of that, it's a great time to really put your hands on your dog and check for anything going on underneath that you didn't know about. You notice more than someone you pay to do it.

After the spa day

Puppies after a full spa day: bath, nails, blow-dry. The white ones still have a yellow tint from birth; it goes away as the new fur comes in and they get whiter every day.

Clean towels, all the time

With puppies this age you're changing towels constantly: smell poop, change the towel. (And you can see the difference here: a mini, and a micro.)

Hygiene, bathing, nails and ears

Upkeep is part of owning a bulldog: hygiene, bathing, nail clipping and ear cleaning. And done right, it actually feels good for them.
