What Should I Watch Out For With a New Bulldog Puppy?
The short answer
One: keep watching them after playtime, even indoors. A puppy can still overheat or get anxious after the fun is over: if it doesn't calm down, put it in a cool, quiet room.
Two: watch the kids. Even a good-tempered puppy shouldn't have bad experiences with kids. Three: after play, don't let them chug water. Let them calm down first so they don't throw up.
Three things most new owners don't think about
One: after playing outside, especially in the sun, keep watching your puppy when it comes inside. It can still overheat, get anxious, or get overly worked up playing with the kids, other puppies or a toy. Boba here comes in at 90 degrees, isn't panting hard, and calms right down. If yours doesn't, put it in a quiet, cool room.
Two: kids. Even with a good-tempered bulldog you have to watch the kids. Boba would never bite my daughter, but you don't want a puppy to keep having bad experiences with kids. That can make it timid, make it run away, or in the worst case, with a dog that isn't well-tempered, lead to a bite. My kids are good with the bulldogs from day one.
Three: after playing, if they're super thirsty, don't let them chug water. Let them calm down first, so they don't throw up.
